The two main types of electric motors used by industries today are AC Motors and DC Motors. The reference of AC or DC gives an indication of how the electric current is transferred both through and from the electric motors. The use and function of AC Motors and DC Motors are very different from each other.
AC Motors are available in two general types. They can either be single-phase or three-phase. DC Motors come in two different types as well. They can either have brushes or be brushless. When in need of utilizing electric motors in your business, you should weigh up the differences that exist between AC Motors and DC Motors in order to come to a conclusion regarding which type is best for your specific use.
Alternating Current, or AC Motors, can be used in a number of different ways depending on the type of AC Motor. Single-phase AC Motors are those electric motors used for general purposes. Single-phase AC Motors work well in a variety of different situations. For example, one such situation is systems that need a lot of power up front because they are difficult to start. However, three-phase AC Motors, also known as poly-phase AC Motors, are more used in industrial settings. Three-phase AC Motors have a high starting power buildup, but transmit lower levels of overall power than single-phase AC Motors. AC power is called so due to the fact that it alternates in power. The amount of power given off by AC Motors is determined by the amount of power the system needs to operate.
Direct Current, or DC Motors, operates best in situations where speed control is of the essence. DC Motors produce a stable but continuous power current. A drawback regarding DC Motors is the fact that, unlike AC Motors, they are not good at producing power over long periods of time. Electric companies using DC Motors came to the conclusion that using DC Motors for electricity generation could not be successful because the power was lost as soon as the electricity was transmitted. DC Motors containing brushes use special rings to conduct the current and thus form the magnetic drive which powers the rotor. In contrast to this, brushless DC Motors use a switch to produce the magnetic drive that powers the rotor. DC Motors are mostly found in appliances used in and around the home.
