How to Wire an AC Motor

This item was filled under [ AC and DC Motors ]

When you have a manufacturer’s manual available, the wiring of an AC Motor is not that difficult a job.  However, if you have no manufacturer’s manual in your possession, wiring an AC Motor becomes a rather tricky situation.  If you feel that you do not have the necessary technical knowledge regarding AC Motors, it is better to consult someone rather than struggling on your own seeing as this could lead to a shocking hazard or something much worse.  In some cases (such as when the wiring schematic cannot be found) it might even be better to purchase a new AC Motor altogether rather than take a chance on something that you are not sure about.

Find below some basic instructions on how to wire an AC Motor.

  • First of all, it is crucial that you remove all electricity from the motor circuitry before wiring your AC Motor.  Open the circuit breaker supplying the power and tag the breaker to make sure that the power will not be accidentally restored to the circuit.

  • Next you should check for a hookup schematic somewhere on the AC Motor.  The correct wiring hookup for your AC Motor is very important.  The schematic may be under an inspection plate or cover of the AC Motor or possibly on the exterior of the AC Motor.

  • Step 3 involves finding the correct wiring connections for your particular AC Motor.  It is a good idea to possibly have a look at a hookup chart for modern AC Motors.  This chart shows you all wiring connection possibilities that could work with your AC Motor.

  • In order to access AC Motor terminals you need to open the AC Motor cover.  Strip the power wire ends and crimp on terminals.  Connect the wiring to the AC Motor terminals, while using wire caps to connect the wires together for the correct rotation.

  • Lastly, replace the cover and energize the AC Motor circuit when the wiring hookup is done.  Ensure that the AC Motor operates in the correct direction.
